SANDLER AND YOUNG
10 March 2021
I had such fun this morning. I woke up at 4:30, an hour and a half later than usual, and was wide awake. I fed Polly, who wasn't going to let me just crawl into the recliner, but wanted to eat now. I decided to check out some You Tube videos.
I found some Great British Baking Show blooper videos, which were fun because I had seen all of the bloopers they chose. I also checked out stand up videos by Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding, two of the hosts of the show.
But then I decided to see if there were any videos by Sandler and Young.
This pair of baritones created a special sound that made them popular from the mid 60s to the mid 80s. I loved them and we have a lot of their albums (remember records?)
I found a lot of videos on YouTube, including concerts, appearances on talk shows and shows like Dean Martin. There were also several videos which were many of their songs, played one after the other, with just the picture of the album from which the song was taken showed on the screen.
I watched a lot of the concerts and talk shows, but then chose one of the video collections and it was wonderful. I could recline the recliner, close my eyes and just listen to a bunch of music that I loved.
We saw Sandler and Young in concert at a club in either Lake Tahoe or Vegas, probably Vegas. They were not headlining, but were the opening act for some nudie-cutie show which we would not have bought a ticket to see, but we couldn't pass up the opportunity to see Sandler and Young.
In fact, after the show, I was standing in the lobby, waiting for Walt, when the two men came down the escalator and I was able to talk to them briefly.
Young retired in the mid-eighties, while Sandler went on to do solo concerts and host his own TV show in Europe. Ralph Young died in 2008, at age 91.
Today's trivia: Pablo Picasso's full name is a real tongue twister. His full name consists of 23 words and honors a variety of relatives and saints. Picasso was baptized with the name Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Martyr Patricio Clito Ruíz y Picasso. Interestingly, his famous last name comes from his mother, María Picasso y López.
Pablo Picasso was a true artist right from the start. According to his mother, his first word was "piz," his attempt at saying "lápiz" — the Spanish word for pen.
