THE OBITUARY

14 February 2022

I checked with the San Rafael Independent Journal to find out about submitting an obituary and the page they link to says that they feel obituaries are important, so there is no charge for obituaries and only for photos which are included.

So I went and wrote an obituary which talks about everything important in my mother's life.  Everybody loved it.

When I went to submit it, there was no mention of "zero charge" and they wanted to charge me >$900.  I am trying to get hold of the newspaper to find out what the deal is but I do want the obituary to be seen, so I will print it here, and hope that eventually it will make it into the newspaper.

Mildred Scott Rynders
Former Resident of San Rafael
1919 - 2022

Mildred Rynders died at the Eldervilla Residential Care Facility in Woodland, California on February 10. She was 102 years old.

Born in Stockton in 1919, she was the 8th child of Stuart Scott and Lucy Kirkpatrick. She had 9 siblings, all of whom pre-deceased her, as did her daughter Karen West (1971), step-son Fred, Jr. (2012) and husband Fred Rynders (1994).

Mildred went to work as a part-time typist for the Bank of America in 1960 and retired in 1975 as a Trust Officer. She was the very first volunteer for Hospice of Marin (now Hospice by the Bay) in 1975 and worked as a volunteer for more than 30 years, her last years spent working in Hodge Podge, the Hospice thrift store.

She was the "hostess with the mostest" and loved to entertain, always with a big smile on her face, the offer of something to drink as you came in the door, and if you spent the night, waking you with a glass of orange juice in the morning. She loved to dance and fell in love with her husband while dancing with him at a local club. She was a passionate card player and could play canasta all day long (and win most games). She particularly enjoyed the monthly "Cousins Day" with her daughter and 2 nieces, and she loved working jigsaw puzzles. She was an avid 49er fan and made a great fresh apple pie.

She had a green thumb and could take a dry stick and make it bloom. She was particularly proud of her orchids; she enjoyed the doves who made a nest in a hanging basket on her porch; and loved to share her nightly ice cream cone with her dachshund Maxie.

She and Fred traveled in their RV and saw a lot of the country. They also visited relatives in the Netherlands, toured Germany in an RV, and later traveled to Buxton, England for a music festival.

She is survived by daughter Beverly Sykes (Walter), step-son Ed Rynders, and step-daughter Ellen Fisher (Charlie). She was grandmother to five children – Jerilyn Sykes (Phil Sequeira), Ned Sykes (Marta), Thomas Sykes (Laurel), Paul, who died in 1999 and David who died in 1996. She had two great grandchildren, Brianna (2008) and Lacie (2011).

Due to the pandemic, there will be no public memorial. In place of flowers, please make a donation to Hospice by the Bay or your favorite Alzheimer’s organization.
