27 December 2021

We never intended to celebrate Christmas on December 25.  The plan was always to have our big family get together on the 27th.  But things began to fall apart.

Walt's brother Norm was scheduled for surgery and would be recuperating on the 27th, so he and Olivia were not going to come.

Tom and Laurel, who always drive to Sacramento from Santa Barbara on Christmas day to spend the day with Laurel's brother and his family couldn't come because her brother tested positive for COVID.

Jeri had planned to fly out from Boston and spend several days here, but she and Phil are buying their flat and she needed to be in Boston to sign papers (the lawyers were making it difficult and she didn't dare leave town until it was all signed).

Ned and Marta were spending 3 days with Marta's family, but would be home on the 27th, but it would be just the four of us.

Even with a mini celebration, it kind of felt like Christmas for a bit in the morning.  I stayed up until 3 a.m. making cinnamon rolls for breakfast, which I baked while Walt was off at Mass.

We watched The Wizard of Oz while Walt was at church.  Ned made his special breakfast and we had a good time.

When breakfast was over, we opened the few gifts that were for the four of us.  I loved my Dr. Fauci action figure!  He now stands on my desk watching out for me.

Ned was happy with the Muppet Animal shirt I found for him and Walt was pleased with the shirt that Polly got for him.

Ned and Marta packed up and headed off to Santa Cruz to meet with Marta's family, leaving Walt and me alone all afternoon.

We had nice long FaceTime chats with Jeri and with Tom and the girls.

Ned had bought a leg of lamb for us and we had that for dinner with a huge artichoke.  Then it was napping through Going My Way and finally settling in to catch up on the hours of sleep I lost while making the cinnamon rolls.

Not the rambunctious Christmas we are accustomed to, but it was still festive and we had a good time.

Marta loves bacon.  I found this for her.
