14 December 2021

We've had fog in the past week or so.  Some mornings so thick that if you look up to the next street, you can't see the stoplight.

I love fog.  Growing up in San Francisco, I loved getting up to go to school and walking up the hill in fog.  I loved hearing the fog horns at night.  I've heard that you can download the sound of fog horns, for people who miss them.

The thing about San Francisco is that it can be clear all day but you can almost set your clock that at 4 p.m., the fog will start rolling in.

Some guy published a book many years ago filled with just fog pictures.

Around here on days when they are warning about fog, most of the time you don't really see much fog in Davis, but if you drive down the highway and come to places where there are open fields, you drive into a fog bank.  It's always scary with drivers who think they can got the speed limit when there is lots of fog, even if you can't see that far ahead of you.

I was disappointed when we went to London.  From watching movies about London and reading books set in London, I had the impression that we would see a lot of fog.

I can't imagine Sherlock Holmes doing anything in London where he wasn't surrounded by fog and surely Jack the Ripper never killed anybody on a clear night.

But in all the times we have been in London, I've never seen any fog at all.  I wonder if the crime rate goes down when there is no fog ...
