9 December 2021

This is the flat I grew up in for 18 years in San Francisco.

No greenery in sight.  I've gone up this hill in recent years and now there are trees planted and it looks much more beautiful, but this is what I remember from my childhood.

My mother grew up in the country, on a ranch for many years and then in a small town.  "Greenery" was always part of her life.  She was also, when I was young, the family photographer and she always wanted to take pictures of us on holidays or other special events.

To take pictures in front of our house was pretty boring

Across the street and up the hill from us was a big apartment building and along the path to the garage there were bushes.  Nice green bushes, which became "the" place to take family pictures.

This was my sister and I with my paternal grandparents on Karen's first communion.

This is my friend Stephen, who lived around the corner from us.  He and I went to our first dance together, as freshmen in high school.

When my friends came to have a sleep over at my house, we had to have our photo taken by the bush.

We have pictures of holidays, birthdays, and just "getting dressed up and going out," all taken in front of those bushes.

I should have taken my kids down there to have their photo taken.

So happy to see Santa
