SPUTNIK

October 14, 2020

Laurelie has asked for the recipe for Sputnik, so here it is:

1 lb hamburger
1 clove garlic
2 Tbsp butter
1 tsp salt and pepper
1 tsp sugar
2 8-oz can tomato sauce
1 8-oz pkg lasagna noodles
2 green onions, chopped
1 8-oz pkg cream cheese, softened
1 cup sour cream

Fry hamburger and garlic in butter.  Cover and simmer.  Then add salt, pepper, sugar, tomato sauce.  Cook Lasagna noodles.  Cream together cream cheese, sour cream and onions.  In a casserole dish, layer noodles, meat mixture and cream mixture, ending with noodles (sauce / noodles/ sauce / noodles / cream cheese / noodles/ sauce / noodles).  Cover with grated Parmesan cheese.  Bake at 350⁰ for 20 minutes

I was snuggled down on the couch last night, going to sleep when there was all this activity in the hallway.  Ned usually brings Bouncer down to pee in the back yard, but I didn't see Bouncer.  I saw Ned and then I saw Marta.  I heard the front door close a couple of times.  After a time they went back upstairs and then a few minutes later, Ned was back down again with Bouncer.  I didn't have a clue what was going on, but I was too close to going to sleep to get up and find out.

When Ned got up this morning I asked him about it.  Apparently the cat got out.  She found a hole in the screen of the window and managed to get out.  They found her out in the back yard.  Ned says he thinks that she didn't jump out the window, but into the tree by the window.

Marta was stressed out and they decided Ned would sleep with the cat so Marta could sleep with the dog and not have to worry.  Ned says he thinks the cat is getting bored because he woke up at 4 a.m. and the cat was doing that cat thing, knocking things off the dresser.  She seems to be mellowing out a bit and maybe in a day or two they will be able to introduce her to Bouncer.

Yesterday was like visiting a mini zoo, there was so much activity outside.

First there was the male with the black testicles, who ate lots of peanuts and was joined by one of the blue jays.  I wonder what the birds do with the peanuts.  The squirrels take a peanut and run into the tree or a chair and sit there and eat the peanut, then come back for another one.

The birds take care to choose the right peanut--maybe pick up one or two and drop them before finding the one they want to take.   Then they fly off into the tree and are back in half a minute to get another one.  I haven't seen a nest in the tree -- it's a bush, actually -- so I don't know where the peanuts go...there isn't enough time for him to actually eat the peanut.

After the male squirrel left, the female came and while I was feeding her, there were other squirrels racing around the yard and a couple of more birds joined the squirrel in picking up peanuts.

Then the babies are getting more active.  They have not left the bird house yet, but they are learning to climb up to the roof and they look over the edge when Mama climbs down to the ground.  I think she is starting to encourage them to leave the nest.

Ned set up a camera on a tripod and sets the video to record and then comes back 15 minutes or so later.  Yesterday he got lots of activity of all four of the babies.  He's thinking that within the next couple days they might leave the nest.

When he has time he will get the movie finished and post it on YouTube.  It should be fun.  I saw part of it where the mother tries to leave the house and the babies grab her by the tail to try to pull her back.

I found something more effective than an alarm clock this morning.  I was sleeping in the recliner, sound asleep, and suddenly the sun moved across the sky and hit me right in the face.  No way I could sleep with the sun shining right on my eyes.  Fortunately I had enough sleep by then anway.
