Today in My History
Nuts and Bolts
24 June 2020
Walt and I will be celebrating our 55th anniversary on Friday.
Char has been scanning her photos and putting them on CD and she came across some photos that her father had taken of our wedding.
My "something borrowed" was the veil I borrowed from Charlotte. Over the years, given how many children all of us had, it became known as the "fertility veil." Char had 5 kids, Pat had 4, I had 5 and Tavie had 2. The "fertility" part of it died when Jeri wore it at her wedding.
But at her wedding, we gathered together all of us who had worn the veil.
I still have guilt about the veil.. Before the wedding, I chose the one person (Walt's cousin's wife) who I knew would handle the veil best and asked her to iron it for Jeri...and she burned a hole in it. She was devastated. Char was very understanding.
We had our reception at the Brazilian room in Tilden Park in Berkeley.
Later, in the 80s, I realized how ironic this was, considering how many Brasilians ended up living with us and what a big part of our life Brasil became.
The funny thing about the reception was that the Brazilian Room was just a building in the middle of the park and a friend was taking movies of everyone and saw a woman slinking out of the building with a couple of glasses of champagne...she was just someone who was picnicking in the park and thought it would be fun to get some champagne from our wedding. She saw Dave filming and tried to be as innocuous as you can be when you are out in open!
So anyway, we've lasted 55 years. It will be a quiet Friday but Ned has arranged for a friend to cater a dinner for the 4 of us on Saturday, to celebrate their anniversary and our anniversary.
