Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Happy Holidays! (from the archives)

1. As you can see, Sam loved giving her annual wish list to Santa. Yet some children are reluctant to climb into Jolly Old St. Nick's lap. Did you enjoy the tradition or were you shy? Or did you by pass it altogether -- either because you wrote him a letter or because your family didn't celebrate Christmas?
I wrote a letter, but I also went and sat on Santa's knee...and was terrified standing in line waiting.  There is a cool play called "Santaland Diaries" by Davis Sedaris where he talks about being an elf in Macy*s one Christmas.  He learns about the “special areas” like the “Oh My God” corner, where parents can finally see Santa and realize how long it was going to take them to get to him, and the “Vomit Corner” where many kids throw up.

2. Are you currently on the Naughty or Nice list? How did you get there?
I'm always on the nice list, by being too boring to get into anything naughty.

3. Did you ship any gifts to friends and family this year? If so, which one traveled the farthest?
My daughter's package traveled the farthest (from California to Boston).  I sent all our gifts to others, but ordered gifts through Amazon, and they did the packing and shipping and didn't charge for postage.

4. Did you buy yourself a gift this year?
Well, I didn't exactly buy a gift but I did buy myself a garlic press.

5. What's your favorite holiday-themed movie? Have you seen it yet this year?
It would be two -- Miracle on 34th Street, which I have not seen yet, and White Christmas, which I have.

6. Thinking of movies, Christmas is lucrative for Hollywood. Have you ever gone to a movie theater on Christmas Day?
No. Christmas has always been a family day.  We've gone, as a family to a movie theater the day after Christmas.

7. Have you ever suffered an embarrassing moment at the company Christmas party?
Sort of.  The very first company Christmas party I was invited to was to my boss's house when I worked for the Physics Department at UC Berkeley.  The time on the invitation was 8 p.m. and I made sure we got there exactly at 8 p.m.  Turns out the family wasn't ready and hadn't really expected anyone until about 9.

8. What's your favorite beverage in cold weather?
Hot coffee.  Not a big fan of holiday drinks.  Just give me a nice cup of black coffee.

9. Share a memory from last Christmas.

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us next week for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your holidays!
