9 February 2019

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants' posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to answer the questions, however, and here is today's questions!

Saturday 9: Waiting for a Star to Fall (1988)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) "Waiting for a Star to Fall" was literally inspired by a falling star. The singing/songwriting duo of Boy Meets Girl was at a big, outdoor concert and could have sworn they saw a falling star in the night sky. Have you ever seen a falling star?

Many times.  Best time was in upper Yosemite during a meteor shower.

2) They offered this song to Whitney Houston, who declined to record it. Whitney did have hits with two other songs they wrote: "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" and "How Will I Know?" What's your favorite Whitney song?

I was never a Whitney Houston fan, but I did like "I will always love you."  (It's also the only song of hers that I can think of!)

3) Boy Meets Girl were George and Shannon, a husband-and-wife team originally from Seattle, WA. In 2016, Seattle was named America's most "bike-friendly city." Do you own a bike?

Not any more.  I had a wonderful bike that I had specially tweaked for me, but I didn't ride it after my bike accident in 2003 and it was stolen out of our carport.  I am nervous about bike riding since the accident so there is no point spending a lot of money to replace the bike when I don't know that I would ever ride it again.

4) George and Shannon met for the first time at a wedding. She was a guest, he was in the band. Think of the last wedding present you bought. Was it from the bride and groom's registry?

I think the very last gift I bought was for a couple who asked not for gifts but for donations to charitable organizaitons.  They are big proponents of pit bull rescue, so I sent a donation to a pit bull organization.

5) In 1988, when this song was popular, 98% of American homes had a TV set. Today, that figure has dipped to 96%, presumably because Millennials are watching more content online. What's the last video you watched online?

Five minutes ago, I watched an episode of Chicago Med that I recorded.  Last night, I watched episode 5 of Season One of Outlander (slowly working my way through all four seasons again).

6) In 1988 saw the introduction of one of the most memorable slogans of all time: "Just Do It." Without looking it up, do you know what brand "Just Do It" promotes?

I am familiar with the slogan, but without loooking it up, I don't know.  I think it might be Nike.

7) In 1988, Sonny Bono went from entertainer to Republican politician when he was elected Mayor of Palm Springs. Have you ever met the mayor of your town?

This is a small town and I have met several mayors.  In fact, one mayor was a neighbor (but she died on vacation many years ago).  I have not met the current mayor.

8) Michael Douglas took home the Oscar in 1988 for his portrayal of Gordon Gekko in the movie Wall Street. The American Film Institute named Gekko one of the "top movie villains of all time." Do you think bad guys are as interesting as good guys?

Well, they certainly make for more interesting news reporting, but after 2-1/2 years of the Trump administration, I am completely sick of hearing about bad guys.

9) Random question: Have you ever seen a photo of yourself naked? (Baby pictures don't count.)

No.  I don't think one exists.

I'd love it if you'd leave a comment!

Apparently someone decided I should approve comments before they appear -- it wasn't me! --
so if you don't see your comment, it's because it's awaiting approval.  Sorry 'bout that!
