Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Happy Holidays! (from the archives)

1. As you can see, Sam loved giving her annual wish list to Santa. Yet some children are reluctant to climb into Jolly Old St. Nick's lap. Did you enjoy the tradition or were you shy? Or did you by pass it altogether -- either because you wrote him a letter or because your family didn't celebrate Christmas?

We went to see Santa at the Emporium in San Francisco.  I was usually terrified, as I wrote in detail earlier this month.

2. Are you currently on the Naughty or Nice list? How did you get there?

Oh, I'm on the nice list.  I'm too old to be on the naughty list.

3. Did you ship any gifts to friends and family this year? If so, which one traveled the farthest?

I've discovered ordering something for our daughter and her husband (who live in Boston) is easier if I have it delivered to them, even if they will be here for Christmas.  Pack up a picture of the thing in a box and you get to see their reaction, you don't have to pay postage, and they don't have to try to figure out how to fit it in their suitcase (and I don't have to try to shop for only small things).  Why didn't I figure this out years ago?

4. Did you buy yourself a gift this year?

No.  I rarely do, though there may be a thing on my wish list that I will think about after Christmas if Santa doesn't.

5. What's your favorite holiday-themed movie? Have you seen it yet this year?

I like Miracle on 34th St. (the original version), which I have not seen yet, and White Christmas, which I have seen once and have on our DVR to watch again.

6. Thinking of movies, Christmas is lucrative for Hollywood. Have you ever gone to a movie theater on Christmas Day?

I'm not sure.  We may have done that last year, since we celebrated Christmas a few days before the 25th.  We went to a movie theater on Thanksgiving this year, though.

7. Have you ever suffered an embarrassing moment at the company Christmas party?

The only one I can remember was waaay back when I first started working for the Physics Department in Berkeley.  My boss hosted a party and I have always been very conscientious about being on time.  I didn't realize that it was fashionable to be late.  We got there right on time and the family was still getting dressed and getting the house ready.  Now I program at least 10 minutes late into my schedule!

8. What's your favorite beverage in cold weather?

Oh Coffee, I guess.  I rarely make anything else, though it would be nice to have a big cup of hot chocolate with whipped cream on it, if there were anybody else who would share the experience with me (Walt is not a hot chocolate drinker)

9. Share a memory from last Christmas.

Tom and his family arrived with this crazy turkey hat and it was the hit of the evening, with lots of fun things going on with it, including, of course, making a movie.

The other big hit was the fart machine Ned gave to each of the girls.

Actually, we celebrated "Christmas" with Tom and his family (and Ned & Marta) on the 15th, so by the time the 25th rolled around we had already had our celebration and had cleaned up and were ready to look to the New Year.

On Christmas day itself, we did lots of texting and face-timing with Tom and the family in Santa Barbara, where the turkey hat was again the hit of the night.

We were glad that we missed the dog eating the prime rib roast they planned for dinner before Tom could cook it.

I wanted to celebrate Christmas with my mother, but she didn't know what day it was and didn't remember "Christmas" at all, which made me sad.

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us next week for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your holidays!
