OLD TIMES...WITH MORE FAT AND LESS HAIR 25 January 2004 It was familiar, and yet not familiar. There we were, gathered around the kitchen table, enjoying a meal. Laughing and enjoying each others company. We had done this many times before, only it was 23 years later. He had less hair, I had more fat, Ned was taller, Walts beard was smaller (and greyer). Other than that, it could have been 1981. Watching Ned and Eduardo reconnect again, so many years later, was one of the most fun things of this afternoon. They slipped almost effortlessly into their old easy camaraderie, reminiscing about things they did together in Rio de Janeiro. I sent the two of them out to have a look at the "new" Davis and to check out memorials to the dead Sykes Kids of Davis (I actually dont know if they did that or not) while I got dinner fixed. Then we sat down to eat the famous quiche.
After dinner, while the guys munched the home made chocolate chip cookies, I pulled out the photo album of Eduardo's five months with us. Everyone enjoyed looking at the photos and reminiscing.
The evening passed all too quickly and it was time for Eduardo to go back to San Jose. His job may be bringing him to California more often in the coming year and while he's not too keen on doing all this travel for work, it would be lovely to have the chance to spend more time with him. He changed the lives of everyone in this family and changed the direction of our lives for ten years. He will always be one of my adopted children.
