OH THOSE SUMMER NIGHTS
(an entry for the On Display
8 August 2003
Summer nights means crowds of people lounging about on the lawn at
Central park, listening to a local band play music.
Summer nights is standing at the food stands, smelling the blend of
Indian, Chinese, Pizza, Tex Mex...looking at other people's plates as they passby,
wondering what your mouth is hungry for this week.
Summer nights is watching the little kids playing in the park water
fountain. My favorite thing to do is to sit on a nearby bench (if I can find room)
with my camera and just take pictures.
Summer nights is running into old friends, sitting on
the lawn and getting caught up, while you munch your burrito or gnosh on your samosa and
listen to the evening's music.
Summer nights is wandering through the stalls of the
farmer's market, picking out fruit, vegetables, and fresh tortillas to get you through the
rest of the week, until you return on Saturday.
I'm glad that I live in a small town which still values
community gatherings and in a city which provides wonderful opportunities for people to
get out of the house and come together to enjoy the pleasures of a summer night.
