PICTURE THIS
8 July 2002
I have returned to Davis. It was a very long day. My mother and I
left Santa Barbara at 9 a.m. and drove until noon, when we stopped for gas and lunch (the
gas went into the car, the food went into us) in King City. We then made the rest of
the trip, sometimes in bumper-to-bumper returning holiday traffic, arriving at my mother's
at 5:30. Then I had the remaining hour-plus drive to Davis, getting home around 7
p.m.
As I said, a long day.
I was supposed to be going to San Francisco for dinner, but it would
have meant retracing my tire tracks over the Golden Gate bridge (the traffic for which was
backed up for miles) and I just wasn't up to it--so I can home.
For an entry tonight, I have the aforementioned photos which I was
unable to post during our time in Santa Barbara.
| On our way down, we stopped in Gonzales and this greasy
spoon called "The Burger Queen," which Walt's family likes to use as a meal stop.
I took this picture of Jeri and my mother outside the restaurant after our meal. |

The morning before our family bike ride, I went for a
bike ride of my own, specifically to take this photo of an absolutely gorgeous grafted
jacaranda tree, which blooms in two different shades of purple. In bright sun, it is
almostly blindingly gorgeous. |
| And then it was finally time for our long-awaited family bike ride! |

This is the famous pelican--we decided that because of
the "fuzz" on its head, it really was a youngster, still trying to get enough
nerve to fly up into the sky to meet the rest of the flock--but in the meantime, it
stopped to make friends with those funny un-feathered creatures who made such a fuss about
it. |
| One of them actually offered some shrimp to eat...yum! |
 |
| The weekend, and the barbecue were all
great fun and we have now once again seen Tom into a new year. He and Laurel seem
to be doing quite well.
