Funny the World...

RUDE AWAKENING

May 30,2000
3:30 a.m.

I fell asleep watching Beloved last night (I'm convinced I'm never going to see that movie) and awoke a few minutes ago with a horrible leg cramp. I also realized I hadn't written a Journal entry. I leaped out of the chair where I'd fallen asleep, scaring a cockroach who was in the middle of the hall (it's approaching summer and they are coming out in force. We're spending a bundle on Roach Motels, which they seem to be ignoring). I feel like Stasi, whose husband realized how addicted she was to journaling when she had to stop, with contractions 5 minutes apart, to dash off a journal entry before leaving for the hospital. (Welcome to the world, Daisy. Your Mom's a little nutty, but she loves you a lot.)

It was a quiet Memorial Day, most of it spent at home getting caught up on the work I hadn't done the previous two days. I did take a run out to the cemetery on my way home from the grocery store. My word, was that a busy place! I usually stop there every week or so and enjoy the peace and quiet, but it was like Grand Central Station and the place was filled with American flags. They lined all the roads, and adorned a good many of the grave sites. I'll be glad to go back next week when it's just me and the dead people--this was entirely too busy for a cemetery.

In the evening, we went to the home of our friends Larry and Steve, who have just remodeled their back yard and were having a picnic to inaugurate it.

It was a small group of our closest friends in Davis and an enjoyable evening. We discussed everything from relations with Cuba to bowel cleansing. Surely you can't ask for more than that.

It's 4 a.m. I'm going to back to sleep. Even the cockroaches know better than to be active at this hour.
